My mother gave me some key gifts in childhood: no matter how young and supposedly inept I was, if I wanted to try something, she let me. Four years old? I wanted to try sewing? She handed me a needle and thread. Wanted to build something? She handed me a hammer and a nail. If I got frustrated, she'd simply tell me to go back and keep trying. After all, she'd say -- you'd never want to give up, no matter how many times you blew it. Success might come the very next time. You wouldn't want to miss it.
