When I was a kid, fascinated with Noah & his off-beat solution to weird weather, I told my mother I wanted to build an ark.

Undeterred by my age — four — Mom handed me a hammer and Volume C of the Encyclopedia Britannica, to better measure a cubit.

I spent the rest of the day, delightedly planning my project. Looking back, at first I wondered at my mother’s recklessness…

… Until I recalled she deliberately withheld nails.
